Sheer and Coleman met at the age of three in the same preschool in Greenwich Village and have never ceased being friends for more than 75 years. Over the years, Sheer has interviewed or appeared in dialogues with Coleman numerous times at ATOA and elsewhere. Coleman has also interviewed Sheer on several occasions. Coleman continues to serve as an advisor to ATOA to this day.
A.D. Coleman
A. D. Coleman has published 8 books and more than 2500 essays on photography and related subjects. Formerly a columnist for the Village Voice, the New York Times, and the New York Observer, Coleman has contributed to ARTnews, Art On Paper, Technology Review, Juliet Art
Magazine (Italy), European Photography (Germany), La Fotografia (Spain) and Art Today (China). His work has been translated into 21 languages and published in 31 countries. In 2002 he received the Culture Prize of the German Photographic Society. In 2010 he received the J. Dudley Johnston Award from the Royal Photographic Society (U.K.) for "sustained excellence in writing about photography." In 2014 he received the Society for Photographic Education's Insight Award for lifetime contribution to the field, and in 2015 the Society of Professional Journalists SDX Award for Research About Journalism.
Coleman's widely read blog "Photocritic International" appears at photocritic.com. Since 2005, exhibitions that he has curated have opened at museums, galleries, and festivals in Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Taiwan, and the U.S.

Douglas I. Sheer
Douglas I. Sheer was one of three artists (with Lori Antonacci and Robert Wiegand) who conceived and organized the critically acclaimed Artist Talk On Art, in 1974, to provide a platform to share opinions and thoughts for critical dialogue in the arts. ATOA’s historic archive was organized by Sheer. It includes the words and images of over 8,500 artists, critics, educators, curators, museum staff, collectors and historians was acquired by the Archives of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution in 2016. In all, ATOA has held over 1,000 talks.
Sheer lives in Woodstock, NY with his wife, the artist and writer Nora Licht. He continues to paint and to exhibit widely.
He previously served on the Board of Directors and programming committee of the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild. He formerly chaired its Byrdcliffe Forum sub-committee. He continues to serve on its exhibition committee.
Sheer also serves on the education and public engagement committee of the Samuel Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz.
In addition to being a co-founder, he is the President of Artists Talk on Art and its Chairman Emeritus.
